Abstract Greens – Save the Bees

New single from Abstract Greens. Released May 2017 on Lone Head Records. A song about the decline of bees in the developed world. What are we doing to nature and this planet?

Loanhead Gala Day – Various Artists Indie Compilation Album

Lone Head Records have released some weird and wonderful music over the years. So it was with great pleasure to put out this album with the sounds of the Scottish Underground Indie Scene.

‘If you really want to know what is going on in any city, listen to the music created by its bands and artists. It tell you all you need to know.’

This 25 track album is a great mixture of all the bands and artists that have recorded and released music on Lone Head Records since 2000. I have to say that I am so proud of all the music on this album. It brings back such happy and wonderful memories. I hope you have time to check out the songs.

‘These tracks are the authentic sound of Edinburgh, the lives and the loves of the city, the dreams and the despair, the people and the places.’

Abstract Greens – Strange Daze Dreams

Abstract Greens release a new album ‘Strange Daze Dreams’. This is a psychedelic pop and rock album. It takes the vibe of that retro 1960’s sound and mixes it with the modern indie electro influences.

I took the vibes of those classic 1960’s bands we all love – The Beatles, The Stones, The Small Faces, The Kinks, The Doors, and Love. Plus many more. Adding into this heady mix the much more modern electro indie sound palette. This melting pot was the basis for ‘Strange Daze Daze’.

Also just as important was the general influence of those masters of the dream experience – The Surrealists. Then recording and mixing in my own Lo-Fi studio to brew up something a bit special.

With todays modern computer technology – music making no longer belongs to the rich and connected. If you have the time and focus – you can make that album of your dreams.

The dream factory was working flat-out – now the work is complete. In many ways this album can perhaps be summed as Scottish Working Class Indie Pop Psychedelia.

So don’t go round thinking ‘Any dream will do’. No – This is time for some ‘Strange Daze Dreams’.

Indietronica Edinburgh

Indietronica is a strange style to define. But I will simply say that this is electronic music made with added guitars. To me that is the essence of ‘Indietronica’ This compilation album of various types of ‘Indietronica’. It has the electronic bleeps and beats to the more relaxed soundtracks. It is a showcase of what Edinburgh is up to on this music front.

Every City has it’s own sound and styles. When it comes to Indietronica – this is Edinburgh. Open your mind and ears to these sounds.

Abstract Greens – Maggie Thatcher Milk Snatcher Chords

I have had requests for the chords to the Abstract Greens song ‘Maggie Thatcher Milk Snatcher’. Well here are the chords

The song uses the Chords A B7 D Dsus4

I mostly play the chords as barre chords. You can of course also just play the open chords. On the recording I do both. But the main part is barre chords.

A                                      B7

Maggie Thatcher was a Milk Snatcher

D                         Dsus4

Or so my father said

D                         Dsus4

When I lived in Loanhead

A                                  B7

1984 she destroyed the miners

D             Dsus4

Going to school

D             Dsus4

Life was so cruel

A                                    B7

I remember you had designer hair

D                 Dsus4

Three cans a day

D                       Dsus4

You blew the Ozone away

This is basically how it carries on.  Listen to the track to hear the guitar rhythm for the D to Dsus4 parts.

The Wordsmiths – Narcissus

‘I’m so comely and winsome and I’m very, very handsome…’

This is the final single that was recorded by The Wordsmiths in Spring 1991. However before it could be released the band had split and the members gone off on new directions. The original DAT tape recording was assumed to have been lost in the mists of time.  Clearing out the attic last month revealed this treasure. It took a while to get it converted to the digital formats of today, but it has been completed. It is now 22 years later than when it was recorded – but finally it is time for the legendary lost classic Wordsmiths single ‘Narcissus’ to finally be released on Lone Head Records. You can still hear the influences of some great Madchester bands – Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses, The Dylans and The Charalatans to name a few.

It seems rather fitting that the eternal youth ‘Narcissus’ should be the final single. Narcissus never did age and neither does the classic indie sound of this single. 22 years ago it was recorded – sounds fresh and funky. Enjoy

‘Boy go out and get yourself a lover, watch her turn into your mother – I’m Narcissus.’

This is the long lost and now found legendary single by The Wordsmiths. It was recorded in Spring 1991 in Penicuik a small town 6 miles south of Edinburgh. The original DAT Tape had gone missing for over 20 years.Recently discovered and restored – here is the glorious last and final single from Scotland’s greatest ever Baggy Band. Fully restored and remastered for your total enjoyment. This was scheduled to be The Wordsmiths final farewell single. A live classic it was recorded but the band had split up by the time it was mixed and mastered. So it was never released. Until now. Released with the original artwork that would have been used by the band.

I’m so comely and winsome
I am very very handsome

I’m my only wish
Cause I am Narcissus

Everytime I see my reflection
I sigh in heaven

I’ll never lie
And I’ll never deceive me

I only want to be me

I’m so comely and winsome
I am very very handsome

I’m my only wish
Cause I am Narcissus

I’m sitting here
Looking so pretty
I’m alone
But’s it’s no pity

I’m my only wish

I don’t need anybody else
I’m in love with myself

I’m Narcissus

Boy go out
and get yourself a lover
Watch her turn
into your mother

I’m Narcissus

I’ll never lie
And I’ll never deceive me

I just want to be me

I’m my only wish
I am Narcissus

I don’t need anybody else
I’m in love with myself

I’m my only wish…

C Harness – Assistance Required (Prozac Mix)

C - HarnessI personally don’t know many songs about social anxiety and social alienation. But this is one I was involved in. C Harness (not his real name) is a good friend. He is a bus driver here in Edinburgh.  One day he was over at the house and we were talking about songwriting. I was asking him about song ideas from real life. Then we came to the conclusion that something dark like social anxiety should be the topic for a track.

We recorded the song over the next 3 – 4 hours upstairs in my bedroom studio. He played the organ and did the bass. I played the guitar and got the drums and beats completed. We both did some vocal duties. I mixed it the next day and it was complete after a touch of mastering a week later.

For a song about such a depressing subject it has proved an undeniably popular track – much to our satisfaction.  I think people like to know they are not alone when it comes to having problems and issues.  Surely one of the great appeals of  bands like The Smiths or Radiohead?

The darkest hour always come before the dawn…
